Why You Might Need Dental Crowns

Dental crowns can protect your tooth after it has been injured, damaged, or has undergone a root canal. Your dentist may also recommend the placement of a dental crown to restore the size, shape, strength, and overall appearance of a tooth.

If you’re searching for a dentist in Douglasville, GA or Bremen, GA because you are having tooth pain or think you may need a dental crown or other cosmetic dentistry procedure, contact us at West Georgia Family Dentistry today.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns look like a small cap that can be placed over the visible portion of your tooth above the gumline. Dental crowns can be made of stainless steel, metal alloys, porcelain, resin, and ceramic. You can consult with one of our dentists about which material will be best for your particular needs and the health of your tooth.

Why You May Need a Dental Crown

A dental crown may be necessary after undergoing a procedure such as a root canal, as it will protect your tooth and root from further damage or injury. You may also need a dental crown if your tooth is weak from illness or decay. Dental crowns can restore broken or damaged teeth, and improve the appearance of discolored teeth. Dental crowns can also hold a dental bridge in place.

What to Expect During the Dental Crown Procedure

You will make 2-3 trips to our office to prepare your tooth for a dental crown. At your first visit, we will take x-rays and determine the extent of damage to your tooth, and discuss whether a dental crown is your best option. We may have you come back in to have a temporary crown placed, or we may do it during that same visit. We will also take impressions of your tooth so the crown can be perfectly fitted.

When your permanent crown has been fabricated by our dental laboratory, you will come back into the office for a fitting. If everything looks good, we will place the permanent crown using dental cement.
